That Persistent Resistance

Book Cover - FinalMost of us know it all too well.  That stubborn side of us that crosses its arms, pouts in the corner and refuses to budge.  That side of us that loudly exclaims, “No!  I don’t wanna do it and you can’t make me!”

Yes, my dear friends — meet “Resistance.”

I’ve been re-aquainting myself with little Miss Resistance ever since I made the commitment to finish my book.  She shows up EVERYWHERE.  She follows me to the coffee shop, to the library, to the beach, even to the bathroom.  Come on, can’t a girl have some peace??

So I decided to face her.  She wasn’t going to leave.  She’d made that quite clear.

“What the hell is up with you?!”

Maybe I could’ve been more gentle, but I was fed up.  She was keeping me from finishing my book.  She was keeping me STUCK.  She was constantly putting “distractions” in front of me — anything to keep me from writing.

Confession: This weekend I watched 15 hours of Revenge.  That’s when I knew I had a problem.

So, I asked her: “What the hell is up with you???  Why won’t you let me write?”

Miss Resistance: “I’m terrified.”

Not just afraidterrified!

That’s when I realized the truth.  This book is sort of a coming out for me.  I’ve been in hiding for years — writing this blog in the safety of my own home, behind the wall of my computer.  But my dream has been to write a book, and actually go out into the world and speak about it.  I’m wise enough to know that you should be careful what you ask for — you might just get it.   Miss Resistance was saying — “If you finish the book, once it’s “out there,” you can no longer stay in your cocoon– you’ll have to fly.”  And even though that’s exactly what I’ve been asking for, it’s friggin’ scary!

Once I made the commitment to mySELF to finish the book, all my insecurities started coming up to keep me from moving forward.  “What do you have to say anyway??  Who do you think you are, giving people advice on relationships???  What gives you the authority?  Ha!  You really think people are gonna read this junk?  You think you’re so spiritual?!  You think you’re FUNNY?” And on and on and on…

My ego would say ANYTHING to keep me from writing.  Anything to keep me small.  Anything to keep me in my so-called comfort zone.

As human beings, we are conditioned to stay in our comfort zone — no matter how painful that comfort zone is.  Children have been known to hang onto a parent’s leg, screaming and crying not to be taken away — even though that parent has abused them for years.  They’d rather stay with the pain that they’re comfortable with, the pain that they “know” and can count on, then go out into the unknown.  Even if the “unknown” means a better life.

It’s not our fault, it’s our nature.  But if we recognize that our resistance to change or growth is holding us back, we can push through it and rebirth ourSELVES into a better life — much like the caterpillar’s “apparent death,” leads him to reemerge as a butterfly.

Our EGO self wants us to stay small.  It’s the ego’s voice of resistance that tricks us with fear and keeps us in situations that aren’t for our highest good — whether that be as damaging as an abusive relationship or as seemingly insignificant as not finishing a book.

As soon as I pinpointed WHY I was resisting — it was much easier to push through it.  Now, instead of seeing my DEADline as a dark, looming, ever-torturing means to an end, I’m reframing it as a LIFEline (thank you, Melissa Lilly, for this awesome term!)– a bright, shiny, new, exciting beginning.  I don’t know where this book will lead me, but I’m now just letting it flow.  I’m enjoying the process of co-creation, without the worry or attachment to how it will turn out.  My job is to write the book with joy, HUmor and wisdom and that’s it.  The rest is up to the Universe.  The rest is up to God.  I’m surrendering the outcome for my highest good.

A lot of times when we challenge ourselves by embarking on new adventures — fear and resistance rear their ugly heads.  This is for our growth.  If we push through it, believe in ourSELVES, TRUST and SURRENDER, we’ll find ourselves in a much better place — a place where resistance turns to going with the flow.  And trust me, it takes much less energy to flow with the current of the stream, than to painfully struggle UPSTREAM.  So, as of now, I’m bidding good-bye to resistance, getting back in the water, and going with the flow.

With LOVE, for the highest good…

I’m Being Followed by a Moonshadow

“I’m being followed by a moonshadow… moonshadow, moonshadow.”  Oh, Cat Stevens, how well you know my predicament these days.

Saturn recently moved into Scorpio, which means for the next 2-3 years, most of us will be face to face with our shadow personality.  Yay!  Lucky us.  What’s a shadow personality?  Well, you know that person you hate “because of this and that and the other”?  “Those people” who embody the horribly awful qualities that you would NEVER admit to having yourself —  like anger, jealousy, greed, hate, gluttony, competitiveness, narcism, arrogance… you get the point.  All that “bad” stuff.

Well, sorry folks, but the truth is that you wouldn’t be able to recognize those “horrible” dark qualities in others if they weren’t already inside YOU.  We all have those aspects tucked away, just waiting for the perfect opportunity to rear their ugly heads.

That’s what’s been happening to me.  Thank you, Saturn in Scorpio.  And since it’s time for all of us to face our shadow, you may also recognize unpleasant feelings coming up for yourself.

Spirit decided to hit me with his/her best shot recently — with a large kick in the butt of shadow shit.  Shadow shit?  I like that!  During a recent visit to the Hawaiian Island of Kauai — yes, that serene, beautiful, peaceful place we all love, I got a huge taste of it.  My shadow showed up in such an undeniable way, I had no choice but to face it.  Have you ever tried to run from your shadow?  Hmmm…. doesn’t work, does it?  There’s a good reason for the saying “Afraid of his own shadow” because it is downright scary.

Luckily, I was visiting Kauai with people who know and love me and were very forgiving when I found that all of my issues were coming up.  I found myself angry, upset, judgmental, impatient, unloving, stubborn, negative, entitled, insecure, abandoned, argumentative ALL AT THE SAME TIME.  And boy, are those feelings painful.

Then I got to thinking.   Okay, Spirit, why are you having me feel all of these emotions all at once?  And why NOW?  I’m in Hawaii, my place of healing…. Oh.  Yeah, my place of healing.

Before I went to Hawaii, I set an intention to release all that was holding me back.  Old patterns, irrational beliefs, anything that was standing in the way of me being my true loving authentic self.  Of course, I also asked to do this with grace.  That’s probably why I was so blessed to be in Hawaii with people who love me unconditionally.  Thank you for that, Spirit.

But as I reflected more on what was happening “to me” or more like “for me” — as far as all the negative emotions were concerned, I had an “aha moment.”  At some point in my life I had judged someone else for “being” the way that I was feeling — angry, negative, stubborn, impatient, etc.  It was as if I was already in Life Review and Spirit was having me feel all the feelings I had judged others for.  And I got it.  I couldn’t have seen those aspects in other people if I didn’t have them within mySELF, so Spirit showed me that I indeed am not perfect.  Ha!  Well, I AM — but not in the way I thought I was… Hahaha!  In short, I was facing my SHADOW.

Once I recognized this, I made a decision.  Instead of running from it (or trying to run from it), I’d face it straight on.  I’d be gentle with mySELF and send LOVE to those “negative” and “dark” parts of mySELF.  Because they are just a part of me as the “positive” and “light” parts of mySELF.  As my wise professors at The University of Santa Monica, Ron and Mary Hulnick say, “Healing is the application of love to the places inside that hurt.”  And boy did experiencing my shadow hurt.  Ouchamunga!!

So I allowed myself to FEEL the emotions, be IN IT for a while and then (in true Spirit form) my friends and I were “led” to a beautiful Hindu Temple in Kapa’a.  “You HAVE to check the Hindu Temple out,” an angel in the form of a perfect stranger told us.  At the entrance to the monastery was a sign that read, “Write down anything you want to release on the paper provided and burn in the fire pit.” (Or something much more eloquent than that.  You get the point.)  Oh, Spirit!  You even led me to a fire pit to burn my issues!  Love it.  So I wrote down all my shadow issues and burned them, releasing them into the nothingness from which they came.  “Thank you for serving me and teaching me what I needed to learn.  I release you with love back into the nothingness from which you came.”

Of course, after that, I was healed, right?  Ha!  Wrong.  I wish it were that easy.  Stuff kept coming up BIG TIME.  But I let mySELF have the feelings.  I honored them as a part of me and kept putting one foot in front of the other.  After all, how bad could it be?  If I was gonna experience the SHADOW SHIT, at least I was blessed enough to do it in Kauai, right?

This experience with my shadow taught me to be more compassionate to those that I may “see” as negative, angry, spiteful, or whatever other dark aspect we see in them because the truth is, those qualities are very painful.  So instead of judging them as “wrong” I will from now on send them love and light for a higher vibrational emotion.  Because, by God — it just FEELS better to be happy.

I wanted to end my Kauai trip on a high note — a note of hope, peace, and new beginnings.  I heard that for Saturn in Scorpio, it’s good Feng Shui to write down all your wishes on a red balloon and release it into the sky.  So we all bought red balloons, wrote our wishes on them and released them at the beach.  It was so wonderful to watch them loft up into the sky — three balloons above the Kauai mountains, all the way up to Heaven where there is a little wish man just waiting to take our orders.  I sure hope I get my new mini iPad!!!  Fingers crossed… 🙂

By the way, as I was writing this blog, the song Moonshadow came on the radio.  No kidding!

With LOVE, for the highest good…

Love Without Attachment?

On my personal path of spiritual transformation, the subject of “attachment” keeps coming forward.  Attachment to outcomes, attachment to other’s reactions, opinions and feelings, attachment to how it’s “supposed to be,” and most of all — attachment in regard to romantic love.

So the question I’m posing today is this: Is it possible to “throw caution to the wind” and love FULLY without attachment?  In my humble, basic-self, HUman experience, the answer is “no.”

Now all you spiritual gurus out there — bear with me for a moment.  I’m not speaking of spiritual love.  The LOVE that we all ARE as spiritual beings.  I’m speaking of romantic love.  Romantic love is different.  True romantic love requires courage, surrender, compromise, vulnerability and giving of oneSELF.  Detachment in the case of romantic love to me feels like an excuse to put up a wall of protection.  It feels like control and fear — which is the opposite of love.

It is the “attachment” to the person that inspires our growth.  If we’re not attached, we can easily run from anything that causes “upset” instead of sticking it out, feeling the emotions, healing the hurts, and rising above it all in service to our mental, spiritual, and emotional growth.  If you remain detached in relationship, there’s no sense of loss if you just walk away.  So you can just go from one relationship to another without fully giving of yourSELF, without surrendering to the ups and downs that inspire growth, without learning anything.  Remaining detached doesn’t serve the soul.  The soul’s purpose is to “experience” all the good and bad that life has to offer in order to learn.

Now all that being said, I do think we are best served if we go through life creating and discovering new things without being attached to the outcome.  Intention is very powerful.  Set your intention, then let it go…  But let’s not underestimate the value in raw romantic “attachment.”  The kind of love that inspires you to be your best SELF.  The kind of love that captures your heart so strongly, that you are forced to learn your lessons — hopefully with grace and love.

To me, that’s the reward of attachment.  What do you think?

With LOVE, for the highest good….

Ready, Set… Let Go?

Wow, it’s been a LONG time since I posted.  I find it kinda funny that my last blog post (in January!) was about how quickly time flies and how so much can change in a “5” year.  Ha! That’s exactly what has happened to me this year.  Since my last post, I ended a long-term (on-and-off) relationship, sold my house, released tons of “stuff” (both material and emotional), moved and got a new puppy — not necessarily in that order.

Everything changes!  That’s the one “sure thing” we can count on in this crazy world.  The big question is: “How do we get through the changes, when, let’s be honest, it feels like our world is crashing down and everything is turning to sh*t?”

Since I write a blog about getting through the ups and downs in life, the Universe decided to give me a final exam in practicing what I preach.  (Thank you, Universe.)  Coming out on the other side, happy, relieved, lighter and ready for new beginnings– I think I passed the test.  Yay me!

But it wasn’t easy.  There were times when I wanted to throw in the towel.  It was just TOO HARD.  Transformation definitely can be painful.  Okay, it IS painful.  I’m not gonna sugar coat the experience by putting a positive spin on it.  It totally sucked BIG TIME!  Suckarooski! (Yes, that is a word! The “ski” makes it Polish, I think…)  BUT through the pain I always knew there was a light at the end of the tunnel.  Even if the light seemed very dim and far, far away — it was there.  Or at least I trusted that it was there. 🙂

During my time of transformation, I not only released a bunch of material stuff I had accumulated over the years — “stuff” that I was convinced was the key to my undying happiness (Ha!) — but I also let go of something even more important in the process — irrational, misbeliefs that had held me back for years, maybe lifetimes.  “I have to be perfect to be loved.”  “I need stuff to make me feel good.”  “A big house and a lucrative job is what will make me ‘successful’ and happy.”  If only, if only, if only… then I’ll be happy.  Sound familiar?

So many of us get caught up in the “if only, then” trap.  If only I had the perfect job, house, car, relationship THEN I’ll ALLOW myself to be happy.  But until we accept where and who we are in the moment — since the moment is all we have anyway — we’ll never find happiness.  Happiness is in the NOW — not somewhere in the future.

After I let everything go — all the stuff, the toxic relationships, the misbeliefs — I was left with one thing — mySELF.  I moved into a tiny new guest house (that I LOVE) and slept.  As it turns out, I don’t need much space.  Who knew?  I let go of the pressure that I had to be DOING SOMETHING — including writing this blog — and I just let myself BE.  I hiked, I rested, I read, (I watched the Bachelorette– Really, Emily?  Jeff over Sean?), I cried, I released, I moved into acceptance (It is JUST a TV show after all), I ate cupcakes… I healed.

And guess what???  I survived!  Yes, folks, I let go of everything I thought was ME.  All those attachments (and shoes — okay, maybe I kept a few of those) that I thought defined me and I’m still here.  Happier, lighter, freer than ever in my life.

And now I am ready for what is to come.  I have a clean slate.  I am ready to paint a new canvas.  I’m ready to create a new reality that is full of love, friendship, family and true abundance — LOVE.  Did I say love?  Let me say it again.  LOVE.  It’s all that matters.  It’s all there is.  It’s why we’re here.  It’s who we are.  Don’t forget it.

So here’s to new beginnings!  I’m sooooooooo excited!

With Love, For the highest good…

Wherever You Go, There You Are

We’ve all been there.  “If I just move, get a new job, a new relationship, find new friends, then my life will be different.”  While this may work for awhile — like a vacation lifts your spirits and refreshes your body and soul — it won’t last.  Why?  Because, wherever YOU go, there YOU are.  It is impossible to escape yourSELF.

While moving may give you a fresh start, before too long, if you haven’t dealt with the issues that made you unhappy in the first place, those issues will eventually start to rear their ugly heads again.  Sadly, you can’t escape them.

Outer experience is a reflection of inner reality.  This means — whatever we are feeling on the inside is reflected in our lives on the outside.  Have you ever been driving while in a bad mood and it seems like everyone is cutting you off — pissing you off even more?  Or you’re feeling happy and relaxed and everyone you meet greets you with a smile?  If you haven’t noticed this — pay attention and see what happens.  You might notice that what you are feeling on the inside is reflected outwardly.  This is because you are creating your experience.  This is not to say that you won’t experience people cutting you off or get stuck in traffic when you’re feeling great, it just means you won’t care or even notice.  You’ll happily let people in front of you with a wave, instead of giving them the finger.  Not that I would EVER do that.  You know the type… 🙂

I realize this may be a hard concept to grasp because we live in a world that focuses so much on victimhood.  “He did this to me.”  “It’s not my fault.”  “My life would be great if SHE would just do this or that.”  Come on, we can ALL relate!  But wouldn’t it be easier and more empowering to know that you can change your outer experience by taking responsibility for your own inner work?  Okay — maybe it’s not exactly easier.  It’s definitely easier for us to blame everyone else for our unhappiness, BUT that won’t change it.  It’ll just put the blame outside of us and, yes folks, we’re just going to keep experiencing the same upset over and over again until we deal with it on the inside.

You can run, but you can’t hide.  Sorry, but you can’t just run away by getting new job, relationship, or house in a different city.  You can’t run away because you can’t outrun yourSELF.  Eventually, yourSELF will catch up and force your to face it.  Damn!  That dang shadow won’t stop following me!!

We are all here to learn our lessons.  And every experience, whether we perceive it to be good or bad is meant to teach us something.  Sometimes it is necessary to make a change with a new relationship or job or to move to a new city.  A fresh perspective may wake us up.  Or maybe we’ve outgrown the past situation and it’s time for new lessons.  Or maybe we weren’t living from our hearts and now we are, so our outer experiences change for the better.

But don’t forget– if you haven’t done the inner work, you may find the same “people” or experiences showing up in disguise.  If you do, it’s time to ask — what am I being asked to heal at this time?  What does my soul want me to learn?  Trust me, it’s better to pay attention, learn the lesson and move on.  Who wants to keep repeating the same class over and over again?  I certainly don’t.  It’s exhausting!  🙂

So let’s all stop blaming everyone else for our unhappiness.  It’s time to take responsibility for ourSELVES and let the healing begin.

Hang on and Enjoy the Ride!

Wow!  What happened to January?  This year is FLYING by already, which is why I felt it was “time” to write this blog post.  I put “time” in quotes, because the concept of linear time is changing, evolving, stretching, and shrinking — all based on our own perceptions.

Now, some of you might argue — the clock still ticks one second at a time.  I get it.  I hear you.  But have you ever been so involved in a creative project for HOURS when it felt like only minutes had gone by?  Or my favorite is when I’m on deadline and I’m able to write pages of material in what I swear is a time warp.  I have no idea why or how, but I’m able to actually slow time down in order to meet my deadline.

In numerology, 2012 is a “5” year.  You get this number by adding up the 2+0+1+2.  What does this mean, you ask?  It means: Hang on!  This year’s going to be a roller coaster ride!  As many of us have already experienced, and it’s only January, the nature of a 5 year is fast, furious and ever-changing.  That doesn’t just mean “big changes.”  It also means — little changes — daily.  For example, if you make a plan for the day, BE FLEXIBLE.  Times, places, dates, ANYTHING can change at the last minute, forcing us to learn flexibility, patience and the ability to go with that flow.

A lot of people do not like change.  So this can pose quite a challenge.  But I’m suggesting that this year, you will have to embrace change.  And clinging to the way things used to be or what seemed to “work” in the past, will only make it more challenging for you in a 5 year.  Remember, it’s not the actual change that’s painful — it’s the RESISTANCE to the change.

Be open to new and wonderful things coming into your life.  Trust that it’s for your highest good if that meeting is canceled or you’re forced to move out of your apartment at the last minute, or even if you lose a job.  Ask your angels for strength, patience and grace during any time of challenge.  And most importantly: nurture yourself.  Be loving, kind, forgiving and compassionate to yourself and others.

Because of the “speed” of a 5 year, it’s also important to stay on task.   If you don’t take small steps every day towards a goal, it’s very easy to look at the calendar and find that days or even months have gone by without any progress.  Set your intentions and create small steps to achieve your goals and do your best to stick to your commitments.  Otherwise, you might find yourself in December wondering what happened to the year.  Which you’ll probably do anyway — but it’d be nice to actually have something tangible to show for the year.

Now back to the “concept” of time.  This would be a great year to work with how you relate to linear time.  I know that probably sounds odd, but if you start paying attention to time, you’ll begin to see trends of how it “speeds up” and “slows down” depending on what you are doing or how you are feeling.  Are you always feeling that you don’t have enough time to do everything?  Do you always think you’re going to be late for or even miss out on an event?  These beliefs create anxiety or fear which are negative emotions.  You’re actually projecting out into the future a “negative” situation that you don’t want to happen.  One way to shift this energy is to “believe” and act as if you DO have enough time.  This will relax you and, believe it or not, SLOW time down, in turn creating a more positive experience.

Here’s an example of how this worked for me recently.  I had planned a trip to Vegas for my birthday last weekend.  Or, I should say, my boyfriend planned it.  Our flight was delayed by 45 minutes making it almost impossible for us to make our dinner reservation.  Wanting everything to be perfect for my birthday, my boyfriend was starting to get a little stressed out.  I remained FLEXIBLE saying, if we miss the reservation, we’ll find another place to eat.  (Yes, something I practice what a preach!)  But inside, I just ACTED AS IF everything was going according to plan.  I BELIEVED we had plenty of “time” to get to our reservation and to the show afterwards.  The flight ended up taking off an hour late.  And after we stood in a REALLY long line to get a taxi, waited for a chatty woman to check us into our room, and picked up our show tickets at Will Call, we STILL easily managed to make our dinner reservation ON TIME.  How this all happened, I have no idea.  It doesn’t make sense logistically.  All I can say is that I remained flexible, believed we had enough time and trusted that everything would go according to plan.  And it did!

Try it.  It works!

I think the big lessons of this “5” year are: FLEXIBILITY, TRUST and ACCEPTANCE of what is.  Just go with it, as I like to say.  You’ll be a lot happier!  🙂

Count Your Blessings, Set New Intentions and Expect a Miracle!

Now that we’ve showered off all the muck from 2011 (see my previous blog post “It’s the End of the Year: Time to Take a Shower”), it’s time to focus on all the blessings the year brought us.

Sometimes when we’re stuck in the chaos of challenges, it’s easy to overlook all the great things the Universe provided for us along the way.  Even if your year “seemed” hopeless, if you look closely, you’ll see that you were taken care of and provided for the entire time.

Let’s shift our energy to the positive and raise our vibration for the New Year!

To do this, I like to make two lists.  The first list is of all the things that I accomplished, manifested, and experienced during the past year — both good and bad.  Don’t be afraid to write down the “bad” stuff because when you do, I think you’ll find that even the perceived “bad” things, turned out to be “good” in some way.  Like for me — I wrote a TV pilot that didn’t sell this year, but because it didn’t sell I had time to create a website, start writing this blog, perform my first stand-up comedy act, spend quality time with friends and family, run a marathon, do a triathlon and travel the world.  Pretty good trade off, I think.  So instead of focusing on the pilot NOT selling, I’m choosing to focus on the great things I got to experience instead.  Wow — you see, just writing that down makes me feel GREAT!  I highly encourage you to do this…

Now that we’re grateful for the year that’s passed, let’s set ourselves up for a fantastic 2012.  Yesterday, in my chiropractor’s office was a huge sign that read: Expect a Miracle!  Okay, those of you who know me, know that I’m crazy about “signs” from the Universe.  If this wasn’t a “sign” I don’t know what is.  I’ve been getting optimistic signs like rainbows — I’m seeing them EVERYWHERE — and of course, my usual butterflies and dimes.  No, I’m not crazy.  Okay, maybe a little.  But I guess I wasn’t taking the “it’s going to get better” hint, so the Universe had to shout it out to me in the form of an actual ten foot sign in the waiting room of my chiropractor’s office — which by the way, has the motto of “Live Life in Alignment.”  Ha!  So perfect!  Anyway, I’m taking this “sign” seriously.  I’M EXPECTING A MIRACLE!  And so should you.  I’m declaring 2012 as “The Year of Miracles.”  Why not?  It certainly can’t hurt.

So on the theme of miracles, I’m going big and I hope you’ll join me.  Here’s where list number two comes in.  What do you want for yourself in 2012?  Write it down!  Some people like to write a letter to themselves from the future talking about how great 2012 was and everything great that happened.  Doing this makes it feel like it’s already happened and shifts your energy into receiving mode.  In order to manifest — your energy needs to match the energy of the experience you want to manifest.  That’s the real “secret” to The Secret and why some people find it difficult to manifest.  Writing it down as if it’s already happened can help you raise your vibrational energy to match your desire.

Another great thing to do is to write down what you want as intentions.  “My intention for 2012 is to find a loving, supportive relationship.”  or “I am in a loving supportive relationship with the man of my dreams.”  Using the words “I am” again makes it feel as if it is already happening.

For Christmas, my brother gave my mom a homemade herb/vegetable garden kit — complete with seeds, small plants, fertilizer, garden tools and even a wooden planter box that he made with my nephew.  I thought this was the greatest gift ever!  Then I thought, what a fantastic way to set intentions for the New Year.  With each seed you plant, set an intention.  You could even place a small slip of paper with the intention written on it in the soil.  Then, each time you water your plants, and watch them grow, you’ll reinforce your intentions.  Of course, as my mom pointed out: Don’t kill them! 🙂  If you live in a cold climate, you could do this same thing with inside herbs.

Remember to reinforce each intention with “This or something better for the highest good of all concerned.”  You never know — the Universe may be cooking something up for you that’s better than you could’ve imagined!

Let’s all laugh off the challenges of last year, count our blessings (being grateful for the good and the bad), set new intentions– and EXPECT MIRACLES in 2012!

Here’s to a happy, prosperous and love-filled 2012!

It’s the End of the Year: Time to Take a Shower!

For a lot of us out there, including me, 2011 has been a year full of growth-provoking challenges meant to help us process and release deep-seeded issues all for the purpose of ushering us into tremendous transformation and higher consciousness — for our highest good.  Did you get all that?  If not, let me make it easier for you: it’s been a year of sh*t!

Now, don’t get me wrong: I mean that in the most positive way possible.

The past few weeks have been VERY challenging for me.  Right before Christmas I had to put down my beloved Ivy dog; I lost out on a job I thought I had in the bag; my computer died; I had a huge shake-up in my relationships with my boyfriend and my dad — all on top of the fact that I’m about to “release” my home and I’m not sure where I’m going to live.

All the time I’ve been going through this, I keep telling myself to just walk through the fire.  I’ll get to the other side, somehow.  I always felt the need to be strong, to hold it together.  Anger scared me.  I was “spiritual.”  It’s not “spiritual” to show anger.  It’s not “spiritual” to want to egg your boss’s house or slash your boyfriend’s tires, right?  The key words here are “want to” folks.  No, I didn’t actually DO it!  Spiritual people are supposed to be centered and calm and see everything from a higher perspective.  For God’s sake — I write this damn blog about how to reframe the challenges!  I should have it all together, right?  Boy, was that an irrational belief I had to expel the hard way.

In my case, the Universe had to throw so much shit at me at once in order to get me to completely lose it and GET IT ALL OUT.  And boy, did I!  If you were driving in Orange County last week and saw some crazy woman raging at a man (my dad) in the front seat, that would’ve been me.  Yup, that calm, spiritual, always positive person screaming at the top of her lungs was ME.  If you were in my path at the time– I apologize.  I had lost control.  But I needed to lose control.  That illusion of control was holding me back.

I admit, there were brief and extremely painful moments during this upheaval when I wanted to call it quits on life in general.  I know I would never do anything stupid, but sometimes life can be TOO MUCH.  But Spirit held me in compassion and encouraged me to release all the painful emotions I had pent up inside me for years.  And with the help of many loving friends and family (and my compassionate Authentic Self) — I got through it.  I’m stronger than I was before and I know the shake-ups and losses happened for my highest good.

Now, after all that releasing — I sure do stink!  But in a good way, of course.  So I say: It’s time to take a shower!  Time to clear away all of the unwanted residue from the year (and from our entire lives) and start fresh.  Time to take responsibility for the chaos WE CREATED in our lives.

Yes, we created it.  Look around your environment — the good, the bad and the ugly… YOU created it.  You created it with your thoughts, your feelings and your intentions — whether conscious or unconscious.  I realize this is a tough pill to swallow.  Believe me, in the middle of the chaos, I’ve struggled with it myself, but it’s true.  Here’s the good news: If you created what you don’t want, you can create what you DO want.  You’re that powerful.

Now, some of you may argue with me: I didn’t want to break up with my boyfriend.  He cheated on me!  How is that my fault?  Or I didn’t want to lose my job.  THEY fired me!

All this may be true.  And all loss is painful and totally sucks.  But think about what you’ve been asking for in your life.  Have you been asking for a more loving relationship?  Have you been wanting to go after a heartfelt dream?  The Universe has your back — even if it seems like your cheating boyfriend doesn’t.  Sometimes we may have to lose someone or something we think we want to make room for what we’re asking for.  Or for what is for our highest good.  The job may have had to go away to force you to go after that dream.

Wouldn’t it be great to take ourselves out of the victim role and OWN our lives again?  The idea that he or she DID something TO you is quite disempowering and takes you away from your true focus.  Think about why you were presented with the challenge or loss.

This is a great time of year to take stock in what you created for yourself.  What is working?  What isn’t working?  When something in your life isn’t working, it sits stagnant and eventually starts to stink — like a dead rat!  I had one of those last year — not pretty.  Get it out!

So as we approach the end of the year, I encourage you to cleanse your life.  Water is a great way to do this.  Take a shower, jump in the ocean, run in the sprinklers (sorry East Coasters, but it’s 80 degrees here in LA).  Do it with the intention of cleansing the old to make way for the new.  If you want to go nuts, clean your house!  Clear out the clutter.  Just because it’s not Spring, doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from Spring cleaning in the Winter.  Burn sage in your house to clear out negative energies.

Then sing, dance and be joyful.  Welcome the New Year with open arms.  Dream big and expect miracles because you deserve the best life.  OWN it all.   The challenges and the blessings.  They’re YOURS!

Have a Blessed New Year!  I love you!

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

It’s that time of year again.  Time for peace, love, joy… and well, let’s face it: disappointment.  Every holiday season we set ourselves up with expectations of bliss because that’s the way it’s “supposed to be,” right?  Not so much…

I don’t want to be a scrooge here.  I LOVE CHRISTMAS!  But with all the “shifting” happening in most of our lives these days, the holidays can add even more stress.  Who needs the extra craziness when we are already finding it difficult to keep our footing?  But the holidays can also be the perfect platform for us to deal with our issues, to heal from the past and to treat everyone with compassion and love.

Now, as I write this blog, I’m begging my wise, authentic self to give me the answers to how I personally can pick myself up off the floor and move on with the holiday season with love.  So forgive me if I’m all over the place.  I’m just trying to find my way…

Here’s how I see it.  We can all just hide under the covers this season, praying that the “rockin’ and rolling” will eventually stop and leave us with some semblance of dignity OR we can accept what is, get up and sing and dance our fears and disappointment of what we “expected our lives to be” away.  Now while my bruised EGO would love to just drink a bottle of wine, eat a box of chocolates and call it quits for the next two weeks, my authentic self, which is made only of LOVE — insists that I take the higher road.

Sometimes life can seem to be too much and the holidays highlight our feelings of loneliness, disappointment, and loss.  But they can also be a time to be grateful for what we do have.  Our friends, our family, our LIFE.  What matters is that we are HERE.  And we’re here not only to learn our lessons and grow, we’re also here to spread the love that is in our hearts.

So if you’re one of the many who are going through a tough time these days, I send you love and light.  I ask you to keep going, keep dreaming, and keep expecting miracles.  Fill your hearts with hope and never give up.  Treat everyone with compassion, forgive those who have hurt you, cry it out if you have to, then turn on some music and “Rock Around the Christmas Tree.”   What do you have to lose?

Happy Holidays to all of you!!  I send you blessings of light and love.  Now get up and dance!

With Love, For the highest good…
